How to prevent skin aging?

The aging of the skin is a biological and natural process. Its signs begin to be noticed around the age of 40 with the development of small wrinkles that, little by little, will become more visible with the passage of time. These signs of age are a consequence of the hormonal decrease that affects the skin cells and the production of collagen and elastin.

Although the aging process of the skin is inevitable, there is a type of aging that can be avoided or reduced: that which occurs prematurely due to bad habits of life and other external factors that harm our skin.

To reduce the risk, we can follow some recommendations:

Healthy and balanced diet

The skin, like any other organ of our body, requires good nutrition to enjoy good health and avoid oxidation caused by free radicals from the environment. To provide antioxidant compounds, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients involved in its restoration, the diet should be based on high quality foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean meats, nuts and omega 3 fatty acids.

A healthy and balanced diet in which these foods are included, along with others with equally beneficial properties, will be of great help to achieve maintain the skin and hair in excellent health conditions.

On the contrary, the excess of food rich in fats and with poor contribution of nutrients, do not give our skin or our body any benefit.

Sleep well

Resting properly is vital to maintain healthy skin. During sleep hours the body secretes several substances that support the cellular regeneration necessary to keep the skin young and in good condition.

To have a restorative rest it is necessary to sleep at least 8 hours a day without interruptions. When we do not rest enough, we run the risk of causing a rapid advance in the aging process of the skin and developing unsightly signs such as dark circles and bags.

Hydrate the skin

Having hydrated skin is key to maintaining its good appearance. Drinking water helps eliminate toxins and keep the skin healthy. The ingested water keeps the skin hydrated and acts as a moisturizer, but from the inside out.

The exact amount that experts suggest varies. As a general rule, it is recommended to drink about two liters of water a day, and even more in places with very hot climates, to compensate for sweating.

We can also hydrate the skin by eating fruits and vegetables, especially those that are high in lycopene and beta carotene, such as red tomatoes, watermelon or carrots. This type of food helps to prepare our skin before the sun.

Protect the skin from the sun

The sun is good for health and brings many physical and emotional benefits such as activating circulation, strengthening bones, strengthening the immune system, balancing the nervous system, improving mood, combating depression, etc.

However, the UV rays of the sun are the main cause of photoaging or premature aging of the skin due to solar ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet light also causes many of your skin conditions as it damages the collagen fibers and causes excessive production of abnormal elastin fibers. The defense mechanism of the skin tries to compensate for these effects with the formation of fibers called “solar scars”, which generate wrinkles and skin depressions.

So when we expose the skin to the sun, it is essential to protect it with sunscreen products, as well as to use hats, caps, sunglasses and light and breathable garments that allow us to cover it in the most sensitive areas. In this way we will also avoid the damage caused by the sun in the superficial and deep layers of the skin, which are not always noticed immediately but end up manifesting with time. In addition, it has been shown that it also influences the risk of melanomas and other types of skin cancer.

No Smoking

It is proven that the skin of smokers ages faster compared to that of people who lead a healthy lifestyle. Tobacco smoke dries the skin and smoking reduces the amount of blood flow that reaches it, depriving it of oxygen and other essential nutrients and causing its dehydration.

In addition, cigarette toxins affect each of the cells in our body. The result is a sicker body and visibly more wrinkled skin, with spots and other skin disorders that deteriorate its appearance. The skin of women, in particular, is more sensitive than men’s to the harmful effects of tobacco because it is more delicate.

Some of the harmful effects of smoking on the skin, bone system or mouth are:

  • Wrinkles marked around lips and eyes as a result of the contraction of the lips when smoking and the act of squinting to avoid smoke.
  • A haggard facial appearance with prominence of the bones.
  • Grayish appearance of the skin.
  • Appearance of purple or yellowish spots.

Practice exercise on a regular basis

Besides helping to keep us in shape, physical exercise helps us regenerate the skin and keep it in perfect condition for longer.

When we play sports, the body eliminates toxic substances that damage the skin and influence the early development of aging. In addition, it is the best way to prevent sagging, another of the factors that make us more prone to the appearance of unwanted wrinkles.

Maintain a good mood

Happiness is directly related to the health of the skin. When we live in a bad mood and our face constantly shows anger or bitterness, these facial gestures end up leaving their mark in the form of unsightly wrinkles.

On the contrary, when we are happy, smiling and jovial it is easier to prevent premature aging.

Stress is another of the main causes of premature aging of the skin. The most visible effects of stress in our body are hair loss, the appearance of wrinkles and other signs associated with aging.

Aesthetic care

Finally, it is good to take care of the skin regularly by submitting it to beauty treatments to ensure a clean skin free of impurities and imperfections. In this way, we will contribute to maintaining your health and significantly improve your external appearance.

The products of external use nourish the skin and stimulate its cellular repair, all of which diminishes and prevents the appearance of wrinkles and spots. They are also suitable to eliminate dead cells, tone and provide deep hydration to preserve the firmness of the skin.

Preventing skin aging is much more effective than correcting it. Therefore, instead of waiting for them to appear, it is best to start acting as soon as possible to avoid all the harmful effects of the factors that develop it.
